In 1978 a group of concerned West Salem Citizen came together to look at the emergency medical services available in the West Salem area. As a result, the West Salem Emergency Medical Team was formed as a 1st Responder Unit - a non-profit, volunteer organization.
A First Responder Unit is designated as those first on the scene of an accident or serious illness to provide EMERGENCY medical care until the ambulance arrives. Our members are specially trained in accordance with state approved courses. We are people, like yourselves, specially trained to help YOU in time of emergency.
When do you call your 1st Responder Unit? Any Time! We are available on a 24 hour-a-day basis to respond to accidents or serious illness. We are not licensed as an ambulance service and CANNOT provide you with transportation to the hospital or local clinic, but can, however, start emergency treatment immediately and help you enter the next step into the emergency medical system.
We cover and area within the West Salem Fire District. In most cases within the village and immediate area we can be on the scene in 5 minutes or less. Time will vary depending on Weather and Road Conditions are up to 10 minutes plus to the outer edges of the fire district.
